The Marvel Cinematic Universe consistently treats fans to new content, both in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order are thrilled that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally hitting theaters, picking up the story after No Way Home‘s twist ending. And while the Brand New Day trailer features Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, a clip recently went viral of him pretending he doesn’t have a role.
Mark Ruffalo has a reputation for revealing Marvel spoilers, but it looks like he tried his best to keep things tight-lipped for the new Spider-Man movie. Case in point: an interview with MTV UK that’s gone viral, where he and Chris Hemsworth were talking about Tom Holland starring in both The Odyssey and Brand New Day. Despite having a role in the latter, Ruffalo is seen in the video saying:
I don’t know anything about… I can’t wait to see them. I hope I can go to the premieres.
Regardless of how many times Ruffalo has spoiled the MCU, he succeeded in not giving away his role in the upcoming Marvel movie. Rumors swirled for months about The Hulk being part of the new Spider-Man movie, with Ruffalo claiming he didn’t have a script back in September… even though filming happened in August of 2025. It seems like he’s learned his lesson.
To clarify, this clip came as Ruffalo and Hemsworth were promoting their roles in Crime 101, which hit theaters back in February. The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived one month later in March, although there were already reports about Bruce Banner having a role. Later in that same interview, Ruffalo doubled down, joking with the Thor actor:
Why aren’t we in those movies?! You and I should be in those movies. Shouldn’t we?
Marvel is known for its tight security, and it looks like after a decade of being in the shared universe, Mark Ruffalo finally figured out how to avoid spoilers. Even if his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was confirmed ahead of its release, the specifics of how Bruce Banner/Hulk factors into the story have remained under wraps. And now audiences can see the movie in theaters and let the twists and turns wash over them.

Of course, this is far from the first time that Marvel actors have had to fib in order to guard the shared universe’s secrets. For instance, Andrew Garfield famously lied about playing Spider-Man in No Way Home. This is just part of the job, and is a big reason why fans don’t believe actors like Elizabeth Olsen when they claim they’re not in future MCU projects.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list, complete with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. We’ll just have to wait and see if any of the stars pop up in Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
